Community Relations

As our company grows and prospers, we are committed to ensuring that the community shares in the economic benefits of a sustainable mining industry

Olympus is committed through a structured approach to managing our interaction with local communities in and around our operations. We are implementing best practices throughout the mine development life-cycle, including exploration, mine development, operations, closure and land reclamation. We are committed to the highest possible standards related to stewardship of the environment, safety, and social responsibility.

At Olympus, we believe that it's important to be a responsible company. We seek to engage with and enhance the communities near our operations, so that they experience real and long-lasting benefits from our presence. We have worked with local communities to provide improved infrastructure, from roads to school classrooms and libraries, community buildings and participation in a program of building new houses for lower income families.

Clean Water Project

In conjunction with the East Meets West Foundation (visit site), we have provided funding and expertise to deliver clean water to over 300 households for the first time. The project, which includes a purification plant for well water, is being extended to include a further 60 households. Maintenance and water quality testing is self-funded by the local community.

Agriculture Program

Our agricultural program seeks to support the local farmers with livestock, feed, veterinary care and training. By providing a breeding pair of animals, with sufficient resources for the first season, we are helping local farmers develop small-scale, sustainable agri-businesses.

Community Initiatives

We have undertaken women’s wellness programs, academic scholarships for local children, direct assistance for ethnic minority groups, support of community sporting events and facilities. At each of our sites, we are constantly seeking to better understand the needs of our communities.

Major Employer

Olympus is an equal opportunity employer providing jobs to over 1200 people, of which 90% are Vietnamese. Olympus has created economic growth in local communities resulting from mine development, building roads, hiring and purchasing locally. Olympus injected approximately USD$40M  in to the local economy in 2010.
